Self-Care is important for every person on this earth. We often don’t take time for ourselves as parents, which can be detrimental to our health and our relationships. The importance of Self-Care cannot be underestimated. But, the trouble is, some of us are not sure how to go about caring for ourselves because we have spent much of our lives caring for others.
Put Your Air Mask On First
Remember, the airline flight attendant that says, “Put your air mask on first.” You can’t help others if you are not healthy or relaxed. I know, if you’re like me, when others need your assistance such as a spouse, parent, or child, you jump in and help in any way that you can without giving yourself a second thought. I am guilty of putting off taking care of my needs before reaching out to help others. This is just who I am.
Reasons for Self-Care
However, we must remember that if we consistently give others our time and attention without taking much needed time for ourselves, we become ineffective. It drains us-body, mind, and spirit. If we put it off for too long, we become tired and often sick. We might start gaining weight, increasing anxiety, insomnia, and becoming irritable.
Some Strategies for Self-Care
My strategies for self-care might not be the same as yours. I try to take time to meditate every day. Some people get a massage. Others enjoy manicures or pedicures. While this is a pricey option, I have done magnesium floats. You need to find what works for you. Self-Care is so important.
